Q254277

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. SUMMARY

Windows 2000 creates an "All Users.Winnt" and a "Default User.Winnt" profile during Setup. An "All Users" and a "Default User" profile also exists in the same folder, without any extension added to the profile name.

MORE INFORMATION

The "All Users.Winnt" and "Default User.Winnt" profiles are created when you have an existing installation of Windows 2000 on your computer and you place another installation on the same partition as the original installation. It does not matter if you put the new installation into a new folder or an existing folder. When the new installation attempts to create the "All Users" and "Default User" profiles in the Documents and Settings folder, profiles with this same name already exist. The "All Users.Winnt" and "Default User.Winnt" profiles are created for the new installation.

To determine what profiles are being used by your installation, check the AllUserProfile and DefaultUserProfile values in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
