SUMMARY

This article explains how remote access and demand-dial clients can obtain the domain name system (DNS) domain name from the remote server.

MORE INFORMATION

Remote access and demand-dial clients can obtain the DNS domain name from the remote server if DhcpInform succeeds on the client. For DhcpInform to succeed, you must do the following on the Windows 2000-based server:

  1. Enable routing.
  2. Install the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) relay agent.
  3. Add the DHCP relay agent to the Internal interface.
  4. Configure the DHCP server to assign domain names, along with Internet Protocol (IP), DNS, and default gateway addresses.

NOTE: Currently, Windows 2000 clients are the only clients that utilize DHCPInform. Windows NT, Windows ME and Windows 98 do not use DHCPInform.
