This article explains how to configure the dialing properties to specify long-distance carrier numbers to use when you are dialing.

In many locations, you can use a carrier number before a long-distance number to specify the company that carries the call (also called the long-distance operator number). If you want to specify a carrier number for your telephony programs, create a new calling card for the sequence by using the 'Dialing Properties' dialog box. Follow these steps:
- On the taskbar, click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Phone And Modem Options, click the Dialing Rules tab, and then click New.
- On the General tab, type a name in the Location Name box, to identify the long-distance carrier.
- Specify the country/region, area code, and dialing rules that apply to the long-distance carrier.
- On the Calling Card tab, click New.
- Type a name to identify the calling card, such as the name of the long-distance carrier, and type the Account and the PIN numbers in the appropriate boxes.
- To specify the dialing sequence for domestic long-distance calls, click the Long Distance tab, and then type the access number for the long-distance carrier in the Access number for long distance calls box.
- Under Calling Card Dialing Steps, click Access Number.
- Add other necessary steps to dial domestic long distance calls by clicking the appropriate button or buttons. Include all the digits and numbers required by the long-distance carrier by clicking Specify Digits.
- To specify the dialing sequence for long-distance calls to other countries, click the 'International' tab, and then type the access number required to dial calls to other countries in the Access number for international calls box.
- Under Calling Card Dialing Steps, click Access Number.
- Add other necessary steps to dial international calls by clicking the appropriate button or buttons. Include all the digits and numbers required by the long-distance carrier by clicking Specify Digits.
- Click the Local Calls tab.
- In Access number for local calls, type the access number required to dial local calls.
- Under Calling Card Dialing Steps, click Access Number.
- Add additional steps to dial local calls by clicking the appropriate button or buttons. Include all the digits and numbers required by the carrier by clicking Specify Digits.
NOTE: If no access number is required, leave Access number for local calls blank. If you only need to dial the local telephone number, click Destination Number, click to clear the Dial The Area Code check box, and then click OK.
- To save the new calling card, click OK.
- On the Calling Card tab, in the Card Types list box, make sure that the new calling card is selected for the location, and then click OK.
- Under Location, leave this location selected if you want to make this long-distance carrier the default for telephony programs, and then click OK.
