Yahoo! offers POP3 e-mail services as well as Web-based e-mail. This article describes how to configure an Internet Mail account with Outlook.

You must be a member of the Yahoo! Delivers program to use Outlook to access mail on the Yahoo! servers.

To Configure a POP3 E-mail Client

To use an e-mail client to send and receive Yahoo! Mail messages, you must designate a new incoming (POP) mail server and a new outgoing (SMTP) mail server.

These are the basic server settings for Yahoo! Mail:

Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: pop.mail.yahoo.com
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Account Name/Login Name: Your Yahoo! Mail name (your address without the "@yahoo.com")
E-mail address: Your Yahoo! Mail address (i.e. user@yahoo.com)
Password: Your Yahoo! Mail password


To Add a New E-mail Account to Your Existing Profile

  1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  2. Click Add and then click Mail.
  3. Type your name as you would like it to appear in the display box and click Next.
  4. In Email Address, type your Yahoo! Mail address, for example, "user@yahoo.com".
  5. In Incoming mail (POP3), type pop.mail.yahoo.com.
  6. In Outgoing mail (SMTP), type smtp.mail.yahoo.com.
  7. Click Next.
  8. In Account Name, type your Yahoo! Mail name (your address without the "@yahoo.com").
  9. Click the Server tab. In Password, type your Yahoo! Mail password.
  10. Click to clear the Log On Using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) check box.
  11. Type a name for your new Internet e-mail account, for example, Yahoo! Mail.
  12. Choose the appropriate connection type under Which Method Do You Use to Connect to the Internet.
  13. Click Finish.


To Control Deletion of Messages from the Yahoo! Mail Server

  1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  2. Click the Mail Services tab.
  3. Click to select your Yahoo! Mail account and click Properties.
  4. Click the Advanced tab.
  5. Click to select the Leave a copy of messages on server, check box if you want to save your Yahoo! Mail messages on the Yahoo! Mail server as well as on your local computer. If you want your messages to be deleted from the Yahoo! Mail server once you have received them, do not check this.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Quit Outlook, and restart.
