U.S. Robotics Courier V.Everything External Plug and Play Modem Not Detected After Restart

Article ID: 253908

Article Last Modified on 2/28/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

This article was previously published under Q253908

SYMPTOMS

After you restart your server, demand-dial interfaces or dial-up connections that use a U.S. Robotics Courier V.Everything External Plug and Play modem may not dial. Demand-dial interfaces show a connection state of "unreachable." Dial-up connections that use the modem report "Error 797." Restarting the Routing and Remote Access service (RAS) does not detect the modem. In the Phone and Modem Options tool in Control Panel, the modem is listed as "Not present."

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the server is shut down or restarted while the demand-dial interface is connected.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods:

  • Restart the server.
  • If you cannot restart the server:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Phone and Modem Options.
    2. On the Modems tab.
    3. Do not remove the currently installed modem that has a status of "Not present."
    4. Click Add.
    5. After the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard starts, click Next to allow Windows to try to detect the modem.
    6. After the modem detection process is complete and no new modem is detected, click Cancel. You may have to close and open the Phone and Modem Options tool again, but the original modem should now be displayed as being connected to the appropriate port. Demand-dial and dial-up connections should function properly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior has also been observed using a Xircom Cardbus Ethernet 10/100 + modem 56 card. Model RBEM56G-100.
