SYMPTOMS

When you receive an e-mail message that has an attachment, right-click the message, and then point to View Attachments on the shortcut menu, you may receive the following error message:

Outlook caused an invalid page fault in module <Unknown>

CAUSE

This error message may have been caused if one of the following third-party compression utilities is installed on your computer:

  • ZipMagic, manufactured by Mijenix Corporation
  • QuickView Plus, manufactured by INSO Corporation
  • WinZip, manufactured by Niko Mak Computing, Inc.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, you must remove one of the following compression utilities if it is installed on your computer. You can also use the work around listed in the "Workaround" section of this article.

  • QuickView Plus
  • ZipMagic
  • WinZip (Version 7.0 or earlier)

NOTE: You should consult the individual product documentation that came with the specific compression utility to disable or uninstall it.

Disable QuickView Plus

QuickView Plus is installed as an Outlook add-in. To disable the add-in, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Other tab, and then click Advanced Options.
  3. Click Add-In Manager, and then click to clear the QuickView Plus check box.
  4. Click OK, click OK, and then click OK again.

The QuickView Plus add-in is deactivated the next time that you start Outlook.

Remove ZipMagic

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click ZipMagic in the list of installed programs.
  4. Click Add/Remove, and then click Yes.

Remove WinZip

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click WinZip in the list of installed programs.
  4. Click Add/Remove, and then click Yes.

Note: You may receive the error message in the "Symptoms" section if a version of WinZip earlier than WinZip 7.0 is installed on your computer. Contact WinZip for an updated version that is compatible with Outlook 2000.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, open the message, and then double-click the attachment to view it. Additionally, you may view the message in the Preview Pane, and then click the paper clip icon to open the attachment.
