XCLN: Reducing the Time It Takes for Remote Users to Download the Offline Address Book

Q253547

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server, version 5.5

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SUMMARY

This article explains how to reduce the download time of the offline Address Book by placing the .oab files and registry data in a distribution share.

MORE INFORMATION

The offline Address Book contains large files which can take a long time to download for remote users who have portable computers or limited bandwidth.

To work around this issue, you can create a distribution share with particular files and registry settings that will eliminate the need for the initial full download of the offline Address Book. In addition, this procedure makes it possible for users to perform incremental updates as changes are made to the Global Address List, instead of needing to download the full version of the offline Address Book each time.

You can use this procedure when you download the offline Address Book to remote client computers during the initial Microsoft Outlook installation. You can also write a program that automates this process.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT or Windows 2000, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To place the .oab files and registry data in a distribution share, follow these steps:

From an Outlook client that is on the network, download the offline Address Book:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Synchronize, and then click Download Address Book.
  2. In the Download Offline Address Book dialog box, accept the default selection for Download Changes Since Last Synchronization, click Full Details, and then click OK.
  3. In the Offline Address Book Selection dialog box, select the address book you want to download, and then click OK.

At the networked Outlook client, locate all files that have an .oab extension. In Microsoft Windows NT, you can find the files in Winnt\Profiles\Local User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook; or, you can use Find on the Start menu to locate the following files:

Anrdex.oab

Browse.oab
Details.oab
Rdndex.oab

Tmplts.oab

Examine the date stamp for each file to verify that you are selecting the correct files, with dates that fit the time you downloaded the offline Address Book.

Copy these .oab files to the distribution share, and from there, download these files to all remote client computers that need the offline Address Book.

At the same networked Outlook client, run Regedit, and then use the Find command to locate the following values:

0003667d (a binary value)

001e667b (a string value)

001e667c (a string value)

Copy this data to the distribution share, and then download and enter this data in each remote computer's registry tree. Make sure that the values are placed at the same registry path as where you found them on the networked Outlook client.

NOTE: This procedure must be performed at least once at each site to get the value of 001e667c.
