Non-Present SCSI Devices Appear in Device Manager When You Are Using Sysprep Version 1.1

Article ID: 253340

Article Last Modified on 9/28/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition

This article was previously published under Q253340

SYMPTOMS

When you are using Sysprep version 1.1 to replicate images of Windows 2000-based systems that contain different boot devices, the SCSI devices that are listed in the [SysprepMassStorage] section of the Sysprep.inf file may appear in Device Manager even though the adapters are not physically installed in the systems.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when you install SCSI devices in the Sysprep.inf file that may be present on the target systems and you use the -pnp switch.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, do not use the -pnp switch when you create the Sysprep image. You should use the -pnp switch only when you anticipate that the target systems will contain legacy (non-Plug and Play) hardware such as ISA adapters. If you determine that some of your systems will have legacy hardware, build them as part of your master image. This way, Plug and Play enumeration is not necessary to install the legacy hardware.

Note that this behavior does not affect IDE devices. Only SCSI devices that have been added to the [SysprepMassStorage] section are affected.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
