This article was previously published under Q253178

Moderate: Requires basic macro, coding, and interoperability skills.

This article applies only to a Microsoft Access project (.adp).

SYMPTOMS

When you try to resize the grid pane or SQL pane in a view in a Microsoft Access project, you may receive the following error message:

In Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

When you click Details (on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, press ALT+D), you receive the following message:

MSACCESS caused an invalid page fault in MDT2FW.DLL at 0167:580bf90f.

NOTE: The actual memory address may vary.

In Microsoft Windows NT:

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

MSAccess.exe

Then Microsoft Access quits unexpectedly.

NOTE: In Microsoft Windows 2000, you do not receive an error message, but Access does quit unexpectedly.

CAUSE

When you resized the pane in Design view of a view, you clicked the right mouse button during the resizing operation.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To temporarily work around this problem, do not click the right mouse button when you resize the panes. Be sure to release the left mouse button first to end the resizing operation before you begin any other operation that may require you to click the right mouse button.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. Open an Access project.
  2. On the Views menu, click New.
  3. Rest the mouse pointer over the resize bar at the top of the grid until you see the mouse pointer become a double arrow.
  4. Press and hold down the left mouse button. It does not matter if you actually move the mouse pointer to resize the pane.
  5. While still holding down the left mouse button, press and release the right mouse button.

Note that you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Summary" section of this article.
