SUMMARY

You must use the Proxy Server 2.0 Installation Wizard for Windows 2000 when you install Proxy Server 2.0 on a computer running Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server.

NOTE: Proxy Server 2.0 can only be installed on Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000 Advanced Server. It cannot be installed on Windows 2000 Professional.

How to Install Proxy Server 2.0 on a New Windows 2000 Installation

  1. Stop any running instances of Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
  2. Download the Proxy Server 2.0 Installation Wizard for Windows 2000 from the following Microsoft Web site:

When prompted, insert the Proxy Server 2.0 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive or type the universal naming convention (UNC) share location for the Proxy Server installation (if the UNC path contains spaces, place quotation marks around the path name).NOTE: Do not manually install Proxy Server 2.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1). The Installation wizard automatically includes SP1 fixes.

How to Upgrade a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server-Based Computer Running Proxy Server 2.0 to Windows 2000

This is the recommended method for upgrading your server. Unless you have already upgraded your computer to Windows 2000, use the following steps. If you have already upgraded your computer to Windows 2000, refer to the "How to Reinstall Proxy Server 2.0 on a Windows 2000-Based Computer" section of this article.

  1. Back up your Proxy Server 2.0 configuration using the Server Backup option.
  2. Uninstall Proxy Server 2.0. When you uninstall the program, do not remove the cache content, logs, or configuration backup files. If remove these files, your backup configuration will be lost.

  3. Upgrade the operating system to Windows 2000.
  4. Stop any running instances of Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
  5. Download the Proxy Server 2.0 Installation Wizard for Windows 2000 from the following Microsoft Web site:
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, insert the Proxy Server 2.0 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive or type the universal naming convention (UNC) share location for the Proxy Server installation (if the UNC path contains spaces, place quotation marks around the path name).

  7. Restore the Proxy Server 2.0 configuration using the Server Restore option.

If you already upgraded to Windows 2000, you can reinstall Proxy Server 2.0 using the Installation wizard. Your previous Proxy Server 2.0 configuration is retained.

In some cases, if you upgrade to Windows 2000 before you uninstall Proxy Server, the computer may stop responding (hang) at start. The desktop may not be displayed completely and "Inetinfo failed to start" and/or "Wspservice failed to start" alert messages may appear on the screen. To work around this behavior:

  1. Start in Safe mode.
  2. Disable the Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) Administration and Winsock Proxy services.
  3. Start in Windows 2000 (regular boot), and then reinstall Proxy Server using the steps in the "How to Reinstall Proxy Server 2.0 on a Windows 2000-Based Computer" section of this article.
  4. Re-enable the disabled services and restart the computer. All services should start normally.

How to Reinstall Proxy Server 2.0 on a Windows 2000-Based Computer

  1. Stop any running instances of Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
  2. Download the Proxy Server 2.0 Installation Wizard for Windows 2000 from the following Microsoft Web site:
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, insert the Proxy Server 2.0 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive or type the UNC share location for the Proxy Server installation (if the UNC path contains spaces, place quotation marks around the path name).
  4. When you run the wizard, you are only given the option to perform a fresh installation, even though Proxy Server is already installed. Your previous configuration is retained.

    NOTE: Do not manually install Proxy Server 2.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1). The Installation wizard automatically includes SP1 fixes.
