SYMPTOMS
After you install BackOffice Server 4.5 on a computer running Windows 2000 Server, users may experience problems when accessing the Library using the Intranet kit.
When a user connects to the http://<servername>/inetkit Web site, they are prompted for their user credentials. After the user enters the correct credentials, the user gains access to the site, but the following error message is displayed:
NOTE: This error message is displayed once after the user clicks OK, and is displayed again when the user tries to navigate through the Library portion of the Inetkit Web site.
CAUSE
This issue can occur if BackOffice Server 4.5 is not installed properly on Windows 2000 Server.
In order for BackOffice Server 4.5 to install properly, the Distributed Transaction Coordinator and Indexing Services must be started before you begin the installation.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:
Method 1
- Click Start, click Run, type cmd.exe, and then press ENTER.
- At the command prompt, change to the
Drive
:\Inetput\Wwwroot\Inetkit\Library folder (whereDrive
is the drive on which the Intranet Kit is installed). - Type the following command
makecm.vbs /s:
server
/v:library /a:library /d:path
where
server
is the name of this server, andpath
is the path to the library (typically, this is C:\Inetput\Wwwroot\Inetkit\Library).
For example, type:makecm.vbs /s:server1 /v:library /a:library /d:c:\inetpub\wwwroot\inetkit\library
Method 2
Remove and reinstall BackOffice 4.5 following the guidelines in the "Installing Microsoft BackOffice Server 4.5 on Windows 2000 Server" White Paper. Remove the products with the steps below, and follow the White Paper to reinstall.
- Uninstall Site Server 3.0 Service Pack 3 using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
NOTE: This may not be possible if an uninstall folder was not created. However, because we are reinstalling this eventually, it is not a problem if you cannot remove it. - Uninstall Site Server 3.0 using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
- Uninstall SQL 7.0 using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
- Uninstall Exchange Server 5.5 using CD-ROM #4, run <CDROM>:\Exchsvr\server\setup\i386\setup.exe.
- Uninstall Proxy Server using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
- Uninstall SNA Server using CD-ROM #7, run <CDROM>:\SNA40\i386\setup.exe.
- Uninstall the BackOffice Server 4.5 Setup files using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
- Restart the computer and make sure all the folders for the associated programs are deleted. These include:
- C:\exchsrvr
- C:\Microsoft Site Server
- C:\MSP
- C:\MSSQL7
- C:\Site Server 3.0 SP2
- C:\Program Files\Microsoft BackOffice
- C:\SNA
- C:\urlcache
- Using Regedt32.exe, delete the following registry keys under this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft
- Inetkit1
- Inetkit2
- BackOffice Web Administrator
- BackOffice Administrator
- BackOffice\Help

- Restart the computer.
- Start the Distributed Transaction Coordinator and Indexing Services.
- Install Site Server 3.0.
- Install Site Server 3.0 Service Pack 2.
- Start the Distributed Transaction Coordinator and Indexing Services.
- Install BackOffice Server components using the BackOffice 4.5 Setup.
- Update the BackOffice components as described in the white paper mentioned above, using the Microsoft BackOffice Server 4.5 Readiness Kit for Windows 2000 CD-ROM.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem when running BackOffice Server 4.5 on Windows 2000.
