SYMPTOMS
When you use the Reschedule Work button on the Tracking toolbar, Microsoft Project may not schedule the task as expected.
NOTE: The Help ToolTip for the Reschedule Work button indicates that Microsoft Project uses the status date. This is not accurate in all situations. For example, assume you have a project with the following dates:
Project start date: 12/1/1999
Current date: 1/31/2000
Status date: 12/27/1999
- You create a task with the following properties:
Duration = 45d
Start = 12/1/1999
Finish = 2/1/2000
Percent Complete = 25% - You assign a resource that uses the Standard base calendar to the task.
- You click the Reschedule Uncompleted Work button.
The result is that Microsoft Project reschedules work using the current date (1/31/2000) and not the status date as expected.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when you click the Reschedule Work button on the Tracking toolbar to reschedule uncompleted work, and the following conditions are true:
- The task start date is prior to the current date.
- The task is not completed.
- The status date of the project is prior to the current date.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods.
Method 1
- On the Tools menu, point to Tracking, and click Update Project.
- Click Reschedule uncompleted work to start.
- Select a date prior to the current date.
Method 2
If you want to use the Reschedule Work button on the Tracking toolbar, change the current date to a date at least one calendar day earlier than the status date. The status date, in this case, is the date when you want work to resume.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Typically, you would not reschedule work from a date in the past; however, in certain planning situations, that may be a requirement. There are at least two automated ways to accomplish this: the Update Project menu item and the Reschedule Work toolbar button. Although the Update Project dialog box allows you to select a date prior to the current date and reschedules from the date that you set in this dialog box, the Reschedule Work button may yield different results. Using the Reschedule Work button adds the requirement that both the status date and the current date be modified. To schedule as expected, the Status Date setting must be at least one calendar day later than the Current Date setting.
