SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to start the Account Joiner utility, it may stop responding (hang) with the following error message:
CAUSE
This error message can occur if you use brackets or parentheses in the management agent (MA) name. The Account Joiner utility considers brackets and parentheses to be illegal characters.
RESOLUTION
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next version of Microsoft Metadirectory Services that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND
There is no workaround for this behavior. Microsoft does not recommend renaming the MA to avoid the problem characters.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in in Zoomit VIA 2.1 and Microsoft Metadirectory Service 2.1.
