WD2000: Cross-References, Captions, and Numbering Are Incorrect

SYMPTOMS

After you save and reopen a Word document, captions and cross-references may be incorrectly marked as changed, and the caption numbers and cross-reference numbers are incorrect.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you save a Word document when the Track changes while editing option is turned on.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To temporarily work around this problem, do not save your document with the Track changes while editing option turned on. To turn the Track changes while editing option off, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, point to Track Changes and click Highlight Changes.
  2. In the Highlight Changes dialog box, clear the Track changes while editing check box.
  3. Click OK.
  4. On the File menu, click Save.

When you close and reopen your Word document, the captions and cross-references will be correct.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
