XFOR: Instant Messaging Contacts Are Not Displayed in Privacy List

Article ID: 252497

Article Last Modified on 2/21/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q252497

SYMPTOMS

When you add an Instant Messaging contact, the newly subscribed user's alias is not displayed on the Instant Messaging client Privacy tab. The only entries that are displayed in the My Allow List column are All other users and your own alias.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because Exchange 2000 does not add specific aliases to the My Allow List or My Block List columns unless you explicitly block or allow that specific Instant Messaging contact. By default, the Instant Messaging client refers to the All other users access control setting, which encompasses all Instant Messaging contacts.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you can specifically allow an Instant Messaging contact and add that contact to the My Allow List column by blocking and then unblocking the user:

  1. Click a contact in the Instant Messaging client.
  2. Right-click the contact, and then click Block. After you perform this step, the Instant Messaging contact is displayed in the My Block List column on the Privacy tab (click Privacy on the Tools menu in the Instant Messaging client to display the Privacy tab).
  3. In the Instant Messaging client, click Privacy on the Tools menu to display the Privacy tab, click the user that you blocked in step 2, and then click Allow. After you perform this step, the Instant Messaging contact is displayed explicitly in the My Allow List column.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
