SUMMARY
When you use user names and Instant Messaging e-mail addresses with more than 20 characters, you cannot log on to an Instant Messaging home server.

To be backward compatible with pre-Microsoft Windows 2000-based servers, the user log on name is truncated to 20 characters when an account is created. This truncated log on name is then used when generating the SMTP address for the user and also for Instant Messaging log on.
NOTE: If you truncate your user name and Instant Messaging e-mail address to 20 characters, you can log on with no problem.
Log on fields for Instant Messaging are designed to accept up to 129 characters (64 for user name, 64 for domain name, and 1 for the at (@) symbol), but the need for backward compatibility for pre-Windows 2000 imposes the 20-character limit.
