SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to install Windows 2000 from a Remote Installation service (RIS) server CD-ROM-based image on a pre-boot execution (PXE) client, you may receive one of the following error messages after acknowledging the F12 prompt to install from the RIS server:
NOTE: In this error message, the word "file" appears truncated as "e".
-or-
CAUSE
These error messages are caused by removing NTFS permissions for the System account or the Administrators group on the Image folders.
RESOLUTION
To eliminate the first error message, add NTFS permissions for the System account or the Administrators group to the Templates folder and files located at:
\\Servername
\REMINST\Setup\Language
\Images\Imagename
\I386\Templates
To eliminate the second error message, add NTFS permissions for the System account or the Administrators group to the I386 folder and files located at:
\\Servername
\REMINST\Setup\Language
\Images\Imagename
\I386
If you want to control which users can install certain images, remove the Everyone group permissions from the specific Image.sif file in the Templates folder, and then apply specific group or user permissions to the .sif file while keeping the Administrators group or System account intact.
