Article ID: 252356

Article Last Modified on 3/1/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q252356

SYMPTOMS

When you install Windows 2000 Server the first time or you promote a Windows 2000 member server to a domain controller and you click This is the only server in my network in the Configure Your Server Wizard, you may overwrite any existing Internet Protocol (IP) address configurations with a 10.10.1.1 IP address and a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0.

These changes are written to the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, DHCP Scope, DNS Resource Records, WINS records, and other Active Directory services that have pre-configured IP addresses as well.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, change the IP addresses manually by deleting and configuring each service with a new IP address.

You cannot reset the IP address by running DCPROMO to demote the server. To avoid this issue, run the DCPROMO command line utility, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

MORE INFORMATION

Any Preferred or Alternate DNS Server or WINS Server addresses designated for that server in TCP/IP Properties remain unchanged.
