Article ID: 252197

Article Last Modified on 4/7/2006

This article was previously published under Q252197

When you name a cell and then reference the cell by name in a formula in another workbook, double-clicking the cell reference in the other workbook does not follow the link to the source. This behavior occurs after you save, close, and reopen the workbook.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

Date Time Version Size File name Platform
   01/11/2000 09:18:54p 3,573 readme.txt x86
   01/11/2000 09:20:28p 4.71.1015.0 2,879,712 Xqfe1811.exe x86

After the hotfix is installed, the following files will have the listed attributes or later:

Date Time Version Size File name Platform
   01/11/2000 04:16:37p 5,618,960 excel.exe x86

To work around this problem, insert a formula that refers to a cell reference before you insert the formulas that refer to names.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
