SYMPTOMS

If you use the Active Directory Installation Wizard (Dcpromo.exe) to remove Active Directory, you are not able to remove the Instant Messaging service. The removal process does not proceed unless the domain controller is present and available.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Exchange 2000 must have access to Active Directory.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
