SYMPTOMS
If the Exchange domain name in the Lotus Notes proxy address for Lotus Notes includes double-byte character set (DBCS) characters, messages sent to an Exchange recipient generate a non-delivery report (NDR) that indicates that the recipient could not be found.
If the Exchange recipient's domain is manually changed to the DBCS character, the message gets delivered to the Exchange recipient, but the Exchange server sends an NDR message back to the Notes sender, indicating that the message is looping.
CAUSE
The messages generate NDRs because the Exchange server changes the DBCS character to a format similar to the following:
=7570=7A2E
This makes the address invalid so that Notes does not recognize the foreign domain.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
MORE INFORMATION
It is an unsupported configuration to use DBCS characters for any addressing with the Microsoft Exchange Lotus Notes Connector.
