XWEB: Files Displayed as Icons Cannot Be Opened in Outlook Web Access

When you double-click files that are embedded in a message body, you may be unable to select and open the files.


This problem can occur if the file was sent in a Rich Text Format message and embedded in the message body by clicking Object on the Insert menu of the new message.

OLE objects are an aspect of Rich Text Format that does not currently exist in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) format. Because OLE objects do not have a corresponding Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) type, the application that corresponds to the OLE object must be installed on the system for the system to be able to process the OLE objects. Because client applications are not typically installed on the Web server, Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) may be unable to actually open the file. However, because attachments that are inserted as icons are visible in Microsoft Outlook as icons, the same icon is displayed in Outlook Web Access.


To work around this problem, ask the person who is sending the files to attach the files to the message instead of embedding the files in the message body.


Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
