XADM: Cannot Install Exchange Server 5.5 in a Mixed Site if Selecting an Exchange 2000 Server When Joining the Site

Article ID: 251817

Article Last Modified on 2/27/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q251817

SYMPTOMS

After you install an Exchange Server 5.5 computer and then join the Exchange Server 5.5 site with an Exchange 2000 server, intrasite replication is forced manually between the two servers. When you attempt to join an Exchange Server 5.5 computer to the mixed Exchange Server 5.5/Exchange 2000 site, and you select the name of the Exchange 2000 server to join the site, you may receive the following error message during Setup:

The system cannot find the file specified.

If you click OK, you receive the same error message.

If you click OK a third time, Setup jumps to the final screen with the following error messages:

Microsoft Exchange Server Setup was interrupted before your new software was fully installed.

You can run Microsoft Exchange Server Setup in its entirety at a later time to complete the installation.

At this point, the only option is to click OK to quit Setup.

CAUSE

Adding an Exchange Server 5.5 computer to a pure Exchange 2000 administrative group does not work.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
