XCON: Routing Engine Generates an Invalid Target Site Distinguished Name

Article ID: 251771

Article Last Modified on 2/21/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q251771

SYMPTOMS

The Exchange 2000 Server routing engine may generate an invalid target site distinguished name in the Gateway Address Resolution Table (GWART) for Exchange 2000 Administration Groups. The routing engine generates a GWART for the Exchange 2000-only site as organization and site name, even though the connector is configured for organization and first routing group.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because routing from Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 in a mixed site to an Exchange 2000 server in an Exchange 2000-only site does not work. However, routing between two Exchange 2000-only sites works correctly in both directions. The originating Exchange Server 5.5 message transfer agent (MTA) generates a non-delivery report (NDR) for the messages locally because the originating Exchange Server 5.5 MTA tries to route on distinguished_name:/organization/site, but the GWART only has a route of distinguished_name:/organization/first_routing_group.

STATUS

This behavior is by design. Exchange 2000 needs to do this to correctly map to the site-name for Exchange Server 5.5.
