Adding Users to a Group Through P and M Web Admin Hangs Inetinfo.exe Service

Article ID: 251263

Article Last Modified on 2/13/2000

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Site Server 3.0 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q251263

SYMPTOMS

When adding users to a group through Microsoft Site Server 3.0 Personalization and Membership Web Administrator, the inetinfo.exe service might hang.

CAUSE

The process of adding a user to a Microsoft Access database creates a very large jetXXX.tmp file in your Windows NT temporary directory. The problem is particularly observed when there is already a very large number of members in the group.

RESOLUTION

It is not recommended to use an Access database on a production server. Microsoft SQL Server is the preferred database to handle large amounts of data.

WORKAROUND

Instead of using an Access database for the membership instance, use SQL Server. SQL Server does not create the jetXXX.tmp file and thus inetinfo.exe service does not hang.

-or

Instead of using the Personalization and Membership Web Admin, use the Site Server Microsoft Management Console (MMC) to add users.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Site Server version 3.0.
