SYMPTOMS
After you install the BackOffice 4.5 Server components on a computer running Windows 2000 Server, the following error message may be displayed when you try to administer Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 using BackOffice Server Manager:
NOTE: This error message varies slightly, depending on the computer name and organization name.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because Windows 2000 Active Directory and Exchange Server 5.5 both use Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) port 389 by default.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use the following steps:
- Click Start, point to Programs, click Microsoft Exchange, and then double-click Microsoft Exchange Administrator.
- In the tree pane, expand
OrganizationName
, expandSiteName
, expand Configuration, and then click Protocols. - In the Protocols section, click LDAP (Directory) Site Defaults.
- On the File menu, click Properties.
- On the General tab, change the LDAP port to 1005 (or another available port).
NOTE: To check port availability, type the following command at a command prompt:netstat -an
- Click OK, and then restart the server.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem when you install BackOffice Server 4.5 on a computer running Windows 2000 Server.
