256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

When you save a file, the "Start in" path in the shortcut properties of a link to a program may not be used as a default path. Instead, Windows may save the file in the My Documents folder.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs to provide a central location to store your files.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this behavior, delete the "Personal" string value from the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
