SYMPTOMS

If you are prompted for a username and password when you try to gain access to an Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) document and the password you use contains special characters, you may receive the following error message:

Access denied error (401).

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Internet Explorer does not accept passwords with special characters, such as the German "umlaute" on Windows NT 4.0.

This issue does not occur on computers running Windows 95 or Windows 98.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, log on the domain, so you are not prompted for a username and password.

NOTE: If you configure Internet Explorer to Prompt always for username/password, you receive the error message even when you are logged on to the domain.

To work around this issue, do not use special characters in your passwords and use Basic Authentication.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
