Your Computer May Have Problems When Resuming from Standby Mode

SYMPTOMS

When you suspend your Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer (or place it in Standby mode) while playing any type of media file, you may experience any of the following symptoms when you try to resume your computer:

  • Your computer may stop responding (hang).
  • Your computer may no longer play audio properly.
  • The screen may remain completely black, or may have a blinking cursor in the upper left-side corner of the screen.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur due to issues with DirectX.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, obtain and install the latest version of DirectX. For information about how to do so, view the following Microsoft Web site:
