SYMPTOMS

When you print Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) content with words in italics that also contain accented characters to a newer Printer Control Language (PCL) printer, a carriage return may be used instead of a backspace to print the accented character.

CAUSE

When Internet Explorer attempts to calculate the character width information needed to pass the PCL printer driver for a given font, it incorrectly calculates the width of the character, which causes the carriage return.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Internet Explorer version 5.01. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Internet Explorer version 5.01 Service Pack 1.
