MACINTOSH

Summary:

When you have transferred a document from MacWrite to Microsoft Works, the following error message may when appear you choose Print or Page Setup from the File menu:

The width of the document is greater than that selected in Page Setup. Some of the text may be truncated.

This error message may appear even if the left and right margins are set to 0, the left indent is 0, and the right indent is 6. However, the document prints correctly.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.

More Information:

This problem occurs because of the way Works interprets MacWrite’s manual page breaks. When MacWrite creates a manual page break, it places a “dead space” between the text and the page break. Works interprets this dead space as a graphic insertion that extends to 14 inches. Within Works, there is no way to delete this graphic insertion or to change its right limit. To avoid this error message, do one of the following:

Method 1

Import the MacWrite document into Microsoft Word and do the following:

  1. From the Edit menu, choose Show Paragraphs. A dotted rectangle will appear, which represents a graphic.
  2. From the Search menu, choose Change. In the Find What box, type ^1. The caret mark (^) is created by pressing SHIFT+6. Click the Change All button and these graphic insertions will disappear.
  3. To move the document back to Works, choose Save As from the File menu.
  4. Click the File Formats button, select Microsoft Works, and click OK. The file will return to Works without the graphic insertions.

Method 2

In MacWrite, do not insert manual page breaks. Instead, insert normal paragraph returns before you transfer the document into Microsoft Works.
