SYMPTOMS

When you are using Paint (Mspaint.exe) and you attempt to browse to a file by specifying the path to an empty drive, you may receive the following error message: A hardware I/O error was reported while accessing Filename

CAUSE

This error message occurs when you attempt to browse a drive that is empty. This message does not indicate a problem.

RESOLUTION

Verify that there is a disk in the selected drive.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
