Kernel32 Error Message in Task Scheduler (Mstask.exe) with Terminal Server Edition

Article ID: 249860

Article Last Modified on 10/30/2003

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0

This article was previously published under Q249860

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Task Scheduler tool (Mstask.exe) that is included in Internet Explorer 5 with Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition, and a scheduled task is started either manually (by using the run command) or at a scheduled time, the following error message may be displayed on the console:

Initialization of the dynamic library system\system32\kernel32.dll failed. The process is terminating abnormally.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Mstask.exe creates scheduled tasks with CreateProcessAsUser(), and uses a token handle that refers to a handle to the access token of the current user shell. This is meaningless in Terminal Server and each access token has a logon ID so there is a logon ID mismatch.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Internet Explorer version 5.01. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
