SYMPTOMS

Outlook 2000 introduced the ability to create Internet Mail accounts using Newprof.exe. The problem is that if the profile already exists, as when you run Newprof.exe a second time, this new account information is deleted. You are left with a profile that has no account information, so there's no way to send or receive mail.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.

MORE INFORMATION

Newprof.exe reads the contents of a .prf file to create an Outlook profile. Outlook uses the profile to store information about a user's e-mail servers, where Outlook information is stored (on the server or in a local file), and other options. The Microsoft Office Resource Kit contains a sample .prf file (outlook.prf) to create an Outlook profile with the Microsoft Exchange Server service and an Internet E-mail service.
