SYMPTOMS

When you right-click a message that contains an attachment, and then click View Attachments, you receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, please contact the program vendor.

When you click Details, the following message appears:

Outlook caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000:00000009.

NOTE: The hexadecimal address that appears in the error message may be different.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To temporarily work around this problem, use either of the following methods.

  • Use an alternate method of viewing the attachment, such as double-clicking it or clicking the paperclip in the preview pane.
  • Delete the extension that registers for attachment events.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To determine which extension is causing the problem, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, and type regedit in the Open box.
  2. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Extensions

  3. Backup the Extensions key by selecting the registry key, and on the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
  4. Delete the extensions one at a time, and test the removal of each.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
