256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

Older (or "legacy") vendor-supplied backup programs may not be aware of Windows 2000 Remote Storage service (RSS) files that have been moved to offline storage. When these files are moved to secondary storage, a reparse point is created that contains information about the file, such as property information (including the create/accessed date, security information, and other information) that may need to be accessed without recalling the file from storage.

When such a program backs up a volume that contains RSS files, it may produce unwanted behavior such as backing up useless data to tape that cannot be used for restoring, or initiating a recall of all the files in offline storage.

WORKAROUND

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this issue, you can add a registry entry that causes your backup program to skip these files when the volume is backed up. To add this entry:

  1. Using Regedt32.exe, locate the following key:

    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Rsfilter

  2. Under the key listed above, add a new key named Parameters.
  3. Under the new Parameters key, add the following value:

    SkipFilesForLegacyBackup: REG_DWORD: 0x1

For this value, 0 = off and 1 = on.

  4. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

The Backup program (Ntbackup.exe) that is included with Windows 2000 is aware of RSS files and handles them appropriately. However, versions of Ntbackup.exe that are included with Microsoft Windows NT are considered legacy backup programs.
