APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Works 2000 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q249689

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert a Draw object from Microsoft Works 2000 into a Microsoft Office program, such as Word, you may receive the following error message:

Winword caused a general protection fault in module Compobj.dll.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true:

  • A 16-bit version of Microsoft Office, such as Office 4.3, is installed on your computer.

  • You upgraded to Microsoft Works 2000 over a 16-bit version of Works.

Works 2000 installs a 32-bit version of Microsoft Draw (version 1.01).

When you attempt to insert a Draw object from Works 2000 into a 16-bit Office program, the Office program attempts to call Draw 1.01. Because a 16-bit program is unable to call a 32-bit program, you receive the error message mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1 (Recommended)

Upgrade to a 32-bit version of Office, such as Microsoft Office 2000.

Method 2

Change your installation of Works 2000 to a minimum installation:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click Microsoft Works 2000, click Add/Remove, and then click Next.
  4. Click Change installation, and then click Next.
  5. Click Minimum Installation, and then click Next.
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen to install a minimum installation of Works 2000.

This procedure removes Draw version 1.01. As a result, any 16-bit or 32-bit Office program can use Draw 1.0.

NOTE: A 16-bit program cannot call a 32-bit program, but a 32-bit program can call a 16-bit program.

MORE INFORMATION

If you change your installation of Works 2000 to a minimum installation, the following Works 2000 components are not installed:

  • Clip Art
  • Converters
  • Filters
  • Microsoft Clip Gallery
  • Microsoft Draw
  • Microsoft Equation Editor
  • Microsoft Note-It
  • Microsoft WordArt
  • Templates
  • Wizards
