SYMPTOMS

When you try to open the event log files that are active on a computer running Windows 2000 using the open log file feature, you receive the following error message:

Unable to complete the operation on "Saved EventLog Log on ComputerName". The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

If you try to open an event log file that you copy from the original file while the event log service is running, you may receive the following error message:

Unable to complete the operation on "Saved EventLog Log on ComputerName". The event log file is corrupted.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

You can open event log files using the Open Log File feature if they were saved using the Event Viewer Save Log File As command or the event log files were not in use or were not copied during use.
