SYMPTOMS

When you are installing Windows 2000 on a Compaq server, Setup may seem to stop responding (hang) during the GUI-mode portion of the installation because the keyboard and mouse stop responding.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs on Compaq servers that contain a Compaq System Configuration utility version earlier than 2.48. Although versions earlier than 2.48 may include an operating system selection to install Windows 2000, it is not compatible. Newer versions of the System Configuration utility enable the hardware functionality needed for Windows 2000 to operate correctly.

RESOLUTION

Refer to Compaq's 1187-1099a-wwen white paper on preparing servers for Windows 2000, and ensure that the operating system is configured as Windows 2000. To view the white paper, visit the following Compaq Web site:

Changing your operating system selection to Windows 2000 in the System Configuration utility enables the following settings:

  • APIC Mode = Full Table
  • Hot Plug Reservation Mode = Extensive (for SMART-2 Array controllers) or = Normal (for all types of PCI controllers)
