Summary:
Microsoft Word versions 3.x do not have a word count feature. However, you can estimate the approximate number of words in a document with one of the following methods:
Method 1
Divide the character count by 6.4. The character count appears in the bottom-left corner of the active window after saving a document or after initially opening a document.
Method2
Use the following procedure, which appeared on page 186 of the January 1988 edition of “MacWorld” (Note: Because this method will alter your document, make sure that you attempt it only on a backup copy):
- Position your insertion point at the beginning of the document.
- From the Search menu, choose Change to search for white space and replace all occurrences with the newline character. (Type “^w” into the Find What text box to indicate white space and “^n” in the Change To box to indicate the newline character).
- Click the Change All button; upon completion of the command, the number of changes (equal to the number of words, plus or minus one) will appear in the lower-left corner of the screen.
For large documents on which such an extensive change cannot be performed, you must use the first method.
