Last reviewed: October 26, 1994
Article ID: Q24951

Summary:

Microsoft File inserts double quotation marks for blank fields when it converts a data file to text or to Microsoft Word print merge format. These quotation marks will appear in other programs when they read in the file.

To remove these quotation marks, do the following:

  1. Load the data file from File into a text editor, for example, Microsoft Word version 4.00.
  2. In Word, do a global search and replace for "". From the Utilities menu, choose Change.
  3. In the Find What box, type "".
  4. Leave the Change To box blank.
  5. Click Change All.
  6. From the File menu, choose Save As.
  7. Click the File Format button.
  8. Select the Text Only option.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Click Save.

To remove all quotation marks from the file, place only one quotation mark in the Find What box.
