SYMPTOMS

When you create a public folder in the Newsgroup hierarchy, an associated newsgroup is created in the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) user interface. The public folder name may be truncated in the NNTP user interface. In addition, when you view the folder on an NNTP client computer, the folder name is truncated.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the maximum string length of a newsgroup title is 32 characters. The maximum string length for a public folder title is 256 characters.

RESOLUTION

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, change the name of the public folder that you created in the Newsgroup hierarchy so that it does not contain more than 32 characters.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
