SYMPTOMS

The Exchange Server computer does not have the Performance Monitor counters, Incoming Inter-Site Replication Updates/sec and Outgoing Inter-Site Replication Messages/sec available to monitor the directory service.

CAUSE

The Perfdsa.dll file is not upgraded when Service Pack 3 (SP3) is applied. The Perfdsa.dll file was not included in the CD image of SP3.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Exchange Server 5.5. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

Component: Directory

File name Version
Perfdsa.dll 5.5.2651.47

WORKAROUND

Manually replace the Perfdsa.dll file from build 2651.47 or later. After you replace the Perfdsa.dll file, reload the counters. To reload the counters, follow these steps:

  1. Open a command prompt.
  2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: cd c:\exchsrvr\bin
  3. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: cd unlodctr msexchangeds
  4. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: cd lodctr dsactrs.ini

The next time you start Performance Monitor, the counters can be viewed. Perform this procedure on each bridgehead that you want to see the counters on. You do not have to restart Directory Services.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 Service Pack 3. This problem was first corrected in Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 4.
