XL97: Links to Closed Workbook Are Not Updated Properly

Article ID: 249159

Article Last Modified on 8/30/2002

  • Microsoft Excel 97 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q249159

When you open a workbook in Microsoft Excel 97, some formulas unexpectedly calculate a value of zero.

  • When you opened the workbook, you clicked No when you were asked to update the links.

  • The workbook that you are linking to is not open.

  • The formulas that do not calculate correctly refer to a defined name in another workbook.

  • The defined name contains a relative cell reference. For example, the defined name refers to =Sheet1!A$1.

  • The following conditions exist in the workbook that contains the defined name:

    • The Iteration option on the Calculation tab of the Options dialog box is enabled.
    • The workbook contains a circular reference.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
