XCLN: Remote Mail Users Working Offline Get Errors When Connecting to the Server

SYMPTOMS

You have remote mail and offline usage set up in Outlook 98 and you are using Remote Access Service (RAS) to connect to the Exchange Server computer. You establish the RAS connection before Outlook 98 is started. You try to connect to the Exchange Server computer using remote mail and you receive the following error message:

Could not download message headers. The Microsoft Exchange server computer is not available. Either there are network problems or the Exchange Server computer is down for maintenance.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, in Outlook, click Synchronize, and then click All Folders on the Tools menu instead of connecting to remote mail under the Tools menu.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Outlook 98.
