SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and wil be shut down.

When you click Details, you may see the following error message:

IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in SHELL32.DLL

When you click Close, you may see the following error message:

There was an internal error and one of the windows you were using will be closed.

If you Search on the toolbar, the search pane may be blank.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if there is an incomplete Search Bar value in the registry.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Delete the Search Bar value from the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main


NOTE: You may have to export and delete the entire registry key to resolve this issue.
