SYMPTOMS

When you try to install a Universal Serial Bus (USB) joystick on your Windows 2000-based computer, you may be unable to do so.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you are not logged on with an account that has administrator privileges.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, log on using an account with administrator privileges and then install the joystick.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Game controllers that connect to a standard joystick port must be installed using the Game Controllers tool in Control Panel. When a user without administrator privileges tries to do this, they are warned that they must be an administrator to install the game controller. Because USB joysticks are fully Plug and Play compatible, installing a USB joystick does not require the user to run the Game Controllers tool in Control Panel. However, the user must have administrator privileges to install the joystick. When you try to verify that the USB joystick installed properly, you receive a warning message indicating that administrator privileges are required to install the joystick.
