SUMMARY

To balance the load on multiple Windows Media servers you can use the Windows NT Load Balance Service (WLBS).

MORE INFORMATION

When using WLBS to balance the load among several Windows Media servers, it is recommended that you turn on affinity for each of the protocols used by Windows Media for unicast streaming. The following filter settings are recommended:

HTTP Streaming

  • Port Range: 80 to 80
  • Protocol: TCP
  • Filtering Mode: Multiple Hosts
  • Affinity: Single or Class C

For TCP and UDP (mmst and mmsu) streaming

  • Port Range: 1755 to 1755
  • Protocol: Both
  • Filtering Mode: Multiple Hosts
  • Affinity: Single or Class C

For TCP and UDP (RTSPT and RTSPU) streaming for Windows Media Services 9 Series

  • Port Range: 554 to 554
  • Protocol: Both
  • Filtering Mode: Multiple Hosts
  • Affinity: Single or Class C

Make sure that all computers are configured with the same WLBS settings.

It is not recommended to use Microsoft Cluster Server to provide high availability with Windows Media Services. WLBS is the preferred method of providing high availability.
