OL2000: Exchange Client Extension Under Outlook 2000 Modifying Wrong Mail Item

Article ID: 248974

Article Last Modified on 10/26/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q248974

SYMPTOMS

If you use a Microsoft Exchange Client extension that handles replies and forwards, problems with the MailItem interfaces may occur during the processing of the OnOpen action. If you modify the new message body, the original message body is modified. These changes are not saved in the message store unless you respond to the Save Changes dialog box. Even if you do not save the changes, when you reopen the original message, the message is displayed with the changes. This is because the message is cached.

NOTE: that although the original message appears to be modified even if you click No in the Save Changes dialog box, the original message is not really modified. The cache is modified; the original message is not modified and saved unless you save the changes.

You can verify this if you drag the message from one message store (a .pst file or Microsoft Exchange Server mailbox) to another one, and reopen the message. When the message is moved across message store boundaries, the cache is flushed, and Outlook is forced to reread the entire message body from the message store.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).
