Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.
This article applies to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb) and to a Microsoft Access project (.adp).
When you start the Form or Report Wizard in Microsoft Access 2000 to create a new form or report, and you then cancel the wizard, you may receive one of the following error messages if you try to open a second instance of the same database:
When the New Object dialog box or the Form or Report Wizard is cancelled, Access puts the opened database in exclusive mode. Canceling the request for a new form or new report should not create a dirty object, but it does. The exclusive lock should be released if there are no other dirty objects in the project, just as it is done when you close the last dirty form.
To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).
To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Access 2000. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
Steps to Reproduce Behavior
- Open sample database Northwind.mdb.
- In the Database window, click Forms under Objects, and then click New.
- Click Cancel in the initial New Form dialog box.
- Start a new instance of Access 2000, and then try to open the same Northwind.mdb database.
Note that you receive one of the error messages mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
NOTE: You can reproduce this same error by choosing a report instead of a form.
